The Saronic islands are very popular Greek islands for summer holidays and weekend breaks. This is because there are the closest Greek islands from Athens. Aegina, Poros, Hydra, and Spetses have developed a lot in tourism over the last years, while Agistri is not that famous but remains a true gem to explore.
Possibly one of the most popular islands is non-motorized Hydra. Everyday life involves navigating your way through cobbled streets and using donkeys or mules to help with heavier items. Swimming from rocky bays in the crystal-clear waters is a popular pastime, or take a water taxi to hidden coves. Hydra Town has been restored and preserved exactly as it was in the 1800s—the Venetian-style architecture stands out immediately upon arrival, with many mansions belonging to ship owners.
The harbor on Poros curves and raises up to overlook the waterfront, which is lined with coffee shops, tavernas, bars, and souvenir shops.
Spetses Town, on the northern coast, is the main settlement here, where super yachts bob up and down in the natural harbour alongside traditional wooden fishing boats.
Neoclassical buildings – most impressively the centenarian Poseidonion Grand Hotel – are flanked by quietly buzzing cafés, stylish boutiques and quayside taverns overlooking the expansive piazza. Locals drink espressos and play backgammon, watching new arrivals stepping off their water taxis.
When to go
The spring, summer and early autumn months are the most rewarding time to visit Saronic Islands, with warm weather and sunny spells gradually increasing from late March through to their peak in august. Low season sees the reduction of many ferry services into the island, while during the core Easter and summer periods, many holidaying locals from Athens choose to descend on the island, making it much more crowded than other times of year.
