The Cyclades is a group of Greek islands, southeast of the mainland in the Aegean Sea. It centers on uninhabited Delos, considered the birthplace of Apollo, and home to some of Greece’s most important archaeological ruins. Many of the islands are popular holiday destinations, known for their beaches, ancient sites, rugged landscapes and traditional blue-and-white stucco towns overlooking the sea
The most popular islands of the Cyclades are Santorini, Mykonos, Paros, Naxos, Milos, Ios, and Amorgos. Nevertheless, all the Cyclades islands are incredibly beautiful and photogenic!
Mykonos might be one of the smallest islands in the Cyclades complex but it makes up for it in character. Its reputation as a glamorous party destination has stuck since the 50s and while it’s true people here know how to have a good time, the island is incredibly beautiful, its beaches and secluded corners offering refuge to those who seek it. There is plenty to keep you occupied in Mykonos, and one of the greatest joys of any trip here is simply exploring its nooks and crannies. For those who want to venture a little further, then the island of Delos is easily reached by boat. The mythical birthplace of twins, Apollo and Artemis, the UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece.
Floating in the southern Aegean Sea is a little slice of Greek heaven, Santorini. A huge volcanic eruption 3,500 years ago left a caldera which turned the then- circular Santorini into a crescent shaped island, one that has been charming visitors ever since. Santorini has a small but flourishing wine industry, the indigenous Assyrtiko grape used to produce beautifully crisp white wines that are best enjoyed with a bowl of fresh seafood.
When to go
Blessed by a lovely climate and warm temperatures for much of the year, the Cyclades Islands can easily be split into a distinct winter and summer season. Rising temperatures and regular sunshine tend to emerge in March, gradually rising before peaking in August. The island sees greater visitors during the core summer months of July and August, making May, June and September particularly rewarding.
